Umbra OS

Encryption as the default state of data.

Every system in use today decrypts data in order to work with it.

We encrypt data at rest. We encrypt it in transit. And then, at the precise moment it becomes useful, we surrender it: to memory, to a process, to a query planner, to a log. Every breach of consequence happens inside that window.

An operating system that never opens that window would not be a better security product. It would be a different assumption about what a computer is.

Why this is only possible now

Fully homomorphic encryption has been mathematically sound since 2009 and practically unusable for just as long. An operating system built on it needs encrypted computation at production speed: in a rack, at a cost an institution will pay.

That is what the accelerator delivers. The product is the proof the idea is buildable.
